Eastern Orthodoxy: A Way of Life
Published in Paperback by Light & Life Communications (June, 1966)
Author: Anthony M Coniaris
Average review score:

Basics of Christian Faith Explained Clearly and Simply
An excellent book for all anyone looking for finding meaning in life or a solid foundation in faith. Each chapter clearly and beautifully explains the basics of Christian faith and life.

The author, Fr. Coniaris, has the ability to communicate the essence of God and Jesus Christ in a language and style that everyone can understand and relate to. Similar to C.S. Lewis' approach , yet with a more concise and succinct flavor, Fr. Coniaris presents us with a brilliant exposition of what truly matters in life. He offers a clear foundation for legitimate thought on the Truth of Christianity, something noticeably absent from most contemporary literature and thinking.

Each chapter of this book presents the reader with a specific Christian topic and issue relevant to many different aspects of our lives; from meaning of life, to Truth, spirituality, repentance, Christ's divinity, marriage, peace, and especially Christian living and responses to many secular and human issues.

Even though I have read this book a few times, I still come away with new insights and fresh understanding each time. I highly recommend it!

Echoes of Memory: Selected Poems of Lucio Mariani (Wesleyan Poetry)
Published in Paperback by Univ Pr of Mississippi (March, 2003)
Authors: Lucio Mariani, Anthony Molino, and Allen S. Weiss
Average review score:

A thoughtful afterword complements this exquisite work
Echoes Of Memory is a collection of selected Italian poetry by the celebrated contemporary writer Lucio Mariani. Each poem is presented both in the original Italian and a facing English translation; the emotion and longing ring through the verses regardless of their language. A thoughtful afterword complements this exquisite work. Alphabets of Surrender: They say it's always the same poem that gets written/The way highland waters spray selfsame streams/The way a doe treks el mismo camino in the snow/If not for the imperceptible sidesteps of suspicion/If not for the grave alarm that sounds new alphabets of surrender/And prompts each of us to cry the poem that is ours alone.

Average review score:

A "must have" text for ecology
An excellent book for the principles of ecology, especially community and population ecology. Provides an introduction to all the basic concepts in ecology and reviews all the milestone studies in the field. Further, it indicates recent trends in research in the field. The language has been kept simple and equations listed are explained very well. Graphs, pictures and diagrams support the the text and useful in enlightening the reader on key concepts. I would say that it is currently the best text book available in ecology for students and ecologists

The Edge of the Sword
Published in Paperback by Ashford Press (December, 1990)
Authors: Anthony Farrar-Hockley and Anthony Farrar-Hockly
Average review score:

A survivor's tale of the "forgotten war"
The author was an British infantry soldier during the Korean War. The bulk of his time was as a captive in Chinese-run P.O.W. camps in North Korea. The book is his riveting up and down diary of his time there.

The book is amazing. You won't be able to put it down. Originally published in 1954, the book is not only important historically. Much of the material here remains timely and relevant, illuminating the methods and tactics of the current government in North Korea.

Although it is an autobiography of the author's many difficulties during capitivity, the book never gets tedious despite the repititiveness of POW life. The author avoids making the story too personal, in the sense that he avoids indulging in many of the negative emotions he must have felt during the worst times. His optomism and realism is a lesson for us all.

He displays a profound understanding of his situation, and, moreover, that of his captors. He affords them a basic working respect throughout, a key to survival in the business of war. Admittedly, he pokes fun at some of camp staff by assigning them nicknames like "pigface" or "pudding face". But that's about as derogatory as he gets.

The book is a brilliant portrayal of the unpredictability of life in the camps, accentuated by the character idiosyncracies of the Chinese supervisors. In this way, the book is a must-read for all students of war, and of Korean/Chinese culture.

Although at times depressing, the author maintains balance in the story (and presumably his own sanity) by showing an appreciation of the simpler things in life. One such joy is simply being able to see the green hills and blue sky through a tiny window in his cell, when his guards would occasionally leave an outer door open.

If you've ever wondered what really happened during the "forgotten war", read this book. It won't answer all your questions ("why did it take two years to reach a truce?"), but it shines a light on a dark spot in history.

Many of the author's friends died in the camps. But this is a story of one man who - perhaps with a little luck - was a winner.

The Edge of Tomorrow
Published in Hardcover by Farrar Straus & Giroux (June, 1958)
Author: Thomas Anthony Dooley
Average review score:

Altruism at it¿s very best.
Dr. Tom Dooley is famous for his selfless work among the people of Laos in the 1950's. Here lay a need for health care in a land with only one western trained doctor, flanked by a multitude of witch doctors, with practices dating back to the Middle Ages. Dooley financed and ran a hospital that lay 5 miles from the border of communist Red China. His tiny 35 bed hospital was just the beginning of a new system that left the people healthier, and trained many of them to continue the work he started long after he was gone.

The book is filled with stories both cheerful and gruesome of his exploits among these uncomplaining people who learned to live with suffering so appalling I cringe to even think back upon it. Such basics as antibiotics, clean water, and a diet rich in the necessary nutrients for a baby to develop with a healthy prospect of seeing the future were lacking. A high mortality rate was more the rule than the exception.

These openhanded and accommodating individuals received Dr. Dooley and his team with a mixture of respect and suspicion. It was his deference and ability to impart the sentiment that Americans were there to help them for the sheer sake of the peoples needs, not for any political agenda, and not to conquer them as part of a realm like so many acquisitions.

The final product was more than one could hope for. The many different companies as well as private citizens that helped to make this endeavor work by volunteering their time and donations are also mentioned in the book with a pride and thankfulness I'm sure that Dooley hoped the world would recognize. This is one of the best books I have ever read. Kelsana 6/5/01

Eight Modern Plays: Authoritative Texts of the Wild Duck, Three Sisters, Candida, the Ghost Sonata, Six Characters in Search of an Author, Long Day' (Norton Critical Editions)
Published in Paperback by W.W. Norton & Company (April, 1991)
Author: Anthony Caputi

A Perfect Collection
This collection defines modern drama. From Ibsen's realistic masterpiece The Wild Duck, to Pirandello's brilliant and revolutionary Six Characters in Search of an Author, to Eugene O'Neill's pitch-perfect character study Long Day's Journey Into Night, this collection is the epitome of modern dramatic literature in all its variations. Even the criticism for each play is brilliant. A definite recommendation for serious readers who haven't read any of these, but want to.

Electric Power System Protection and Coordination: A Design Handbook for Overcurrent Protection
Published in Hardcover by McGraw-Hill Professional (January, 1995)
Authors: Michael A. Anthony and Mike Anthony
Average review score:

Well written and practical
The book allows anyone from an electrical designer to an electrical engineer a practical way to develop their skills in power system engineering. There are many worked examples which get you to understand the concepts being put across.

The short circuit method discussed (without the annoying use of the per unit system) is flexible and powerful. I refer to it time and again.

This is a must-have resource.
